6W6Mo5Cr4V cold work die steel

2026-07-03
6W6Mo5Cr4V is a low-carbon high-speed cold work die steel. By reducing the carbon content (0.55%-0.65%) and vanadium content (0.70%-1.10%), the carbide distribution morphology is significantly optimized.

6W6Mo5Cr4V Die Steel Characteristics:
High Hardness and Wear Resistance: After quenching, the hardness reaches 60-63 HRC, and the compressive strength reaches 3000-3200 MPa, suitable for high-wear conditions.

Balancing Strength and Toughness: Impact toughness is 50%-100% higher than traditional high-speed steel, and bending strength is 20%-30% higher than Cr12 type die steel, effectively preventing brittle fracture.

Excellent thermal stability: Maintains high hardness and strength even at high temperatures, with a thermal conductivity of 34.3 W/(m·K) (478℃) and a coefficient of thermal expansion of 12.5×10⁻⁶/℃ (0-100℃).

Process adaptability: Can be formed by forging, hot rolling, and cold working, but attention should be paid to its tendency to decarburize; machining allowance should be increased by 10%-15% to compensate for the impact of decarburization.

Heat treatment process for 6W6Mo5Cr4V steel:

1. Annealing treatment
Process: Heating at 850-860℃ and holding for 1-2 hours, then slow cooling to 550℃ followed by air cooling.

Target: Reduce hardness to ≤269HB, improving machinability.

2. Quenching process
Parameters: Oil cooling at 1180-1200℃, grain size controlled at 10-12 grade.

Result: Hardness ≥60HRC, ensuring uniform austenitization of the matrix structure. 3. Tempering Process
Parameters: Three-stage tempering at 560-580℃, holding time 1.5-2 hours per stage.

Results: Eliminates residual stress, achieving a final hardness of 60-63 HRC, and further improving toughness.

Applications of 6W6Mo5Cr4V Die Steel:
6W6Mo5Cr4V is particularly suitable for making cold extrusion dies and cold heading dies for high-strength steel. When the workpiece material is quenched and tempered steel such as 40Cr and 30CrMnSi, the resistance to cold extrusion deformation is extremely high. The punch life of ordinary cold work die steels (such as Cr12MoV) is only a few thousand pieces before breaking, while 6W6Mo5Cr4V can last for 20,000-30,000 pieces.
