The material choose for cold work stamping die is comprehensively decided by product size and shape, material to be stamped, working load, batch quantity, and mold manufacturing cost.
Carbon Tool Steel
As for thin plate die with small batch quantity, small size, simple shape, and light working load, it will use carbon tool steel. Due to the 0.7%-1.3% carbon content, the price is cheap and has good machining property.
Low Alloy Die Steel
For medium-batch blanking die with large size and complex shape, then choose low alloy die steel material. The common grades: 9Mn2V, 9CrWmn, CrWMn, 9SiCr, and 6CrNiMnSiMoV.
High Alloy Cold Work Die Steel
For large batch die with large size and much complex shape, then it will choose high alloy cold work die steel. This material has high abrasive resistance, high hardness, compressive strength and high strength. Common grades are SKD12, Cr12MoV, SKD11, DC53, D2.
