SKD11 is a high-carbon, high-chromium cold work mold steel renowned for its exceptional performance in applications requiring high hardness, wear resistance, and toughness. Its key characteristics include:
High Hardness and Wear Resistance
SKD11 achieves a hardness of HRC 60–62 after heat treatment, attributed to its uniform distribution of fine carbides formed by chromium, molybdenum, and vanadium. This makes it ideal for tools subjected to abrasive wear, such as punches, dies, and cutting tools.
Excellent Quenching Properties
The steel exhibits superior hardenability, allowing it to be air-cooled after quenching without risking cracking. This simplifies heat treatment processes and reduces production costs.
High Toughness and Crack Resistance
Despite its high hardness, SKD11 maintains good toughness due to its refined microstructure and the addition of alloying elements like molybdenum and vanadium. This prevents brittle failure, even under high-impact loads.
Thermal Stability and Fatigue Resistance
SKD11 can withstand sudden temperature changes without compromising its mechanical properties, making it suitable for hot-work applications like die-casting molds. Its resistance to thermal fatigue ensures longer service life in cyclic heating/cooling environments.
Dimensional Stability
The steel demonstrates minimal deformation during heat treatment, ensuring precise dimensional accuracy for high-precision molds. This is critical for applications requiring tight tolerances, such as electronic component molding.
Processability
SKD11 is easily machinable in its annealed state, facilitating the fabrication of complex mold geometries. Its good grindability further enhances its suitability for precision tooling.
Surface Treatment Compatibility
SKD11 responds well to surface treatments like nitriding and PVD/CVD coatings, which can further enhance its surface hardness and wear resistance. Nitriding, for example, can increase surface hardness to 1200–1250 HV, extending tool life.
Corrosion Resistance
While not as corrosion-resistant as stainless steels, SKD11’s chromium content provides some protection against oxidation, making it suitable for environments with moderate corrosion risks.
